Employees often have a hard time bringing up problems that they have in the workplace. They may fear retaliation from managers or even their coworkers. However, there is a correct way to bring up problems and ensure that they are handled in a satisfactory manner. One of the most important parts of conflict management is keeping it private.

First, employees should look in their employee or organization handbook. There should be a section for employee complaints and problems. That section should have information about the human resources department and how to contact them. Employees should be sure to bring complaints up to human resources and no one else. Managers may retaliate in subtle ways, like scheduling unfavorable shifts or telling other employees about the complaint. However, the human resources department is required to keep problems confidential.

When an employee brings up an issue to human resources, they should be sure to document it. Keeping a journal of the problems that occur, when the problems are discussed with human resources, and what human resources does to fix the problem can help the employee protect themselves if it turns into a hostile workplace situation.

It is also important to avoid discussing problems with coworkers. This can start the rumor mill churning and make problems worse. If there is a specific person that is the reason for the complaints, the story can get back to them and cause workplace tension. Working only with human resources is the best way to ensure that problems are dealt with promptly, efficiently, and professionally.
